AI in your business — the questions owners actually ask
Not the sales version. The questions people ask when the pitch is over and they are deciding.
We answer calls all day with Fiona, our own AI receptionist, on 0141 345 5562. These are the things callers ask before they trust it — including the ones with no comfortable answer.
1. Will my customers hate talking to an AI?
Some will prefer a human. That is real, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. But here is what actually happens: the alternative is not a human, it is voicemail. A caller with a burst pipe at nine in the evening would far rather talk to an AI that books them in than to a ringing phone that nobody answers. The complaint customers make is not "I got an AI" — it is "nobody picked up".
2. Will people be able to tell?
Yes, usually within the first sentence — and she tells them herself, up front. That is deliberate. An AI that pretends to be a person is a liability the moment someone asks a question it fumbles. One that says plainly "I'm an AI assistant" starts the call with trust instead of suspicion.
3. Is this going to replace my receptionist?
No — and if a company tells you it will, they are selling you a problem. What it replaces is the phone going unanswered: lunch cover, the school run, after six, the hour you are up a ladder with both hands full. If you employ someone, they come back to a tidy list of calls already booked instead of fourteen missed-call notifications.
4. What if it doesn't know the answer?
It says so and takes a message. That behaviour is enforced rather than hoped for — the system is instructed never to invent a price, a date or an availability, and to hand over details instead. A wrong answer is worse than no answer, because you find out about it from an angry customer.
5. What happens if it books something wrong?
You see every booking, and you can cancel or move it like any other. Nothing is hidden from you. We also record calls, so if something goes wrong you can listen to exactly what was said rather than guessing.
6. Is it legal? GDPR? Do I have to tell people?
You do have to tell people, and she does — the opening line says she is an AI and that the call is recorded. Callers are told at the start, not buried in a policy. Recordings are stored to your retention period, and we do not sell or share caller data. ScotReach is ICO-registered.
7. How much is it compared to a person?
A part-time receptionist is roughly £1,200 to £1,600 a month before you count holiday, sick pay or the hours nobody covers. Fiona is £125 a month with no setup fee, and she works every hour of every day. That comparison is not close, which is why this sells itself once a business actually counts the calls it misses.
8. Does it sound Scottish? Will it understand my customers?
The voice is natural and it handles accents well, but we are not going to claim it never mishears anything. What matters more is what it does next: it asks again rather than guessing, and it takes a number so a person can call back. Ring it yourself on 0141 345 5562 before you decide anything — that number is answered by the same system we would set up for you.
9. Will it work for my trade?
It works best where enquiries are routine and repeatable — bookings, availability, opening hours, service areas, quotes for standard jobs. It works least well where every call is a complex negotiation. The free assessment tells you which of those you actually are, honestly, including when the answer is that you do not need this.
10. What if I want it turned off?
No contract. Cancel and it stops. We would rather you left than felt trapped, because trapped customers do not refer anybody.
11. Can it chase the lead after the call?
Yes — and that is included in the £125, not sold separately. If someone enquires and goes quiet, she follows up rather than leaving the enquiry to rot. Most missed revenue is not the call you never got, it is the one you got and never called back.
12. Do I have to change my phone number?
No. We forward your existing number to her, or she answers a new one and you keep yours for outbound. Most clients keep their number and let her take the overflow.
The question nobody asks out loud
"Am I too small for this?"
Usually the opposite. One-man bands miss the most calls, because when you are doing the work there is nobody at the desk. The businesses that most need this are the ones with no receptionist to replace.
